Raritan Adds Three-Phase Models to its Intelligent Energy Management Rack Power Distribution Unit Product Line

--  Helps customers solve rising energy costs in data centers; Raritan’s new rack PDUs monitor power at the device and rack level, as well as keep an eye on rack temperature and humidity --

SOMERSET, N.J. (September 16, 2008) – Raritan today introduced three-phase models to its Dominion® PX line of intelligent power distribution units (PDUs) that provide granular power usage information – down to the individual outlet level – and support rack temperature and humidity sensors.  Detailed, real-time power information is helpful to IT and facility managers looking to improve data center uptime, enhance power and cooling capacity planning and improve energy efficiency.

“Detailed power information, provided through the Dominion PX’s Web-based graphical user interface, is helping customers solve a host of energy-related issues in their data centers,” said Herman Chan, Raritan’s Power Management Solutions Business Unit leader.  “It’s amazing what customers can learn about their data centers from the information gathered from our networked power strips with built-in intelligence.  Our smart PDUs can help identify energy-wasting, poor-performing servers.  They can discover underutilized servers as candidates to virtualize.  They can, even, find problem hot spots and excessive cooling at the rack, and circuit loads that are about to trip breakers.  They also can help locate racks with available power capacity to add more IT equipment.”

Other benefits of the new rack PDU include the ability to access servers from remote locations in order to power on and off and power cycle; configure alerts for notification of exceeded critical and non-critical thresholds; and control outlet groups, using a single-IP-address, within a single PDU or across multiple PDUs.

As a new class of intelligent PDU, the Dominion PX provides accurate real-world metering and other information helpful for load balancing and build outs, including circuit breaker details and status, line (PDU input) details, a PDU status screen with line and circuit status, and an outlet detail screen with line(s) and circuit identified.  The outlet details provide administrators the information they need for determining which devices should be plugged into which circuits to better balance power loads.

The new three-phase PDUs work in concert with Raritan’s newly introduced Power IQ™, an element management and analytics solution that turns high volumes of power-utilization and environmental data collected by PDUs into valuable power usage insight.  Power IQ gathers and analyzes power information on individual servers, in real time – and supports collection of data from Raritan’s Dominion PX and third-party PDUs.  Customers, for example, can use Power IQ to generate reports on baseline energy usage, and track improvements on energy-saving initiatives and circuit capacity utilization.  The open database connectivity (ODBC)-compliant system can be integrated with data warehouse and enterprise reporting systems.  Power IQ can also centrally manage PDUs, making it easier to deploy and manage PDUs in larger data centers.

The three-phase Dominion PX models -- PX-5532 and PX-5534 -- have three 20 amp circuits of eight outlets each.  Each circuit is protected with a 20 amp hydraulic-magnetic UL 489 circuit breaker.  The new PDUs can be used to balance loads across all the lines of a three-phase system to minimize harmonics and to prevent excessively heating wires.  The line readings, presented on the PX’s GUI, can be used to check the current loads on each line.  The Outlet Detail screen shows which lines are supplying current to the outlet.  This information helps identify which devices should be moved to other circuits to balance the loads across all lines.  The Outlet Detail screen also identifies the circuit breaker status -- open or closed -- and the total current draw through the circuit supporting the outlet.

Availability & Pricing
Available starting today in North America, Dominion PX-5532 and PX-5534 have a MSRP of US$1,975.  Temperature and humidity sensors are sold separately.

The three-phase rack PDUs are available as ZeroU vertical-mount PDUs with 24 outlets – eight IEC C-13s or seven IEC C-13s and one IEC C-19, for each of three 20 amp circuits.  The LED meter is in the middle of the PDU for easy mounting of power connections at either the floor or ceiling using the provided mounting brackets.  The three-phase PDU has a CS-8365-C California style, 50 amp, three-pole, four-wire, grounding, twist-lock plug.  They support 208 and 240 volts and 35 amps per line (14.4 kVA total at 240V).
