Data Center Power Expert from Raritan to Present ‘Optimize Power through Server Analysis’ Talk at AFCOM’s Data Center World

Data Center Power Expert from Raritan to Present ‘Optimize Power through Server Analysis' Talk at AFCOM's Data Center World

SOMERSET, N.J. (October 3, 2008) - Skyrocketing energy costs and power availability concerns are driving IT and facility managers to look for new ways to make data centers more energy efficient.   Raritan's Director of Power Management Solutions Herman Chan will share tips on where and how to look for power problem spots with attendees at next week's AFCOM's Data Center World Conference.

Chan's presentation --"Optimize Power through Server Analysis"-- focuses on the need to measure power at the device level in order to improve data center energy efficiency.  His AFCOM talk will explore the myths and realities of power measurement and new tools and methodologies for calculating data center power efficiency.  Attendees also will learn how to take steps to align with the new Green Grid data center standards.

The session is scheduled for October 7 at 3:15 pm.

According to Chan, "Tracking and displaying power at the IT device level are laying the groundwork for making high-value improvements in capacity management and energy efficiency.  Being able to monitor, analyze and manage power usage at the outlet level means companies can pinpoint problems before they affect service, make informed rack capacity decisions, and take steps towards green computing." Granular power information, for example, can help identify underutilized servers as candidates to virtualize, problem hot spots or over-cooled areas, circuit breakers at the point of tripping, and racks with available power capacity to add more IT equipment.

Herman is responsible for driving Raritan's global market development efforts for power management solutions.  His responsibilities encompass emerging technologies, strategic partnerships, as well as worldwide go-to-market initiatives.  Prior to accepting this role, Chan led the market and technology efforts for Raritan's remote management and monitoring business units.

Raritan's Intelligent Power Strips and Power IQ Analytics help reduce carbon footprint.
Raritan's power management product lines are designed to help IT administrators know more and manage smarter, thereby improving data center operations.  To address the growing number of power issues in data centers, Raritan's power management solutions help companies easily determine the actual power usage and capacity in their data centers, monitor rack temperature and humidity, and power sequence IT equipment from anywhere.

Based on the simple premise that you can't manage it if you can't measure it, Raritan's intelligent PDU, Dominion® PX, provides real-time, detailed outlet-level information on power drawn through individual outlets -- whereas other solutions typically provide only an aggregate view of power through the PDU as a whole.  Optional temperature and humidity sensors plug into Raritan's intelligent PDU to provide real-time environmental information.

Raritan's Power IQTM aggregates power-utilization data collected from multiple intelligent rack PDUs -- including third-party-vendor PDUs -- for use in power usage trend analysis and reporting.  The information helps IT managers make key data center health and optimization decisions.  Customers can use Power IQ to generate reports on baseline energy usage, and track improvements on energy saving initiatives and circuit capacity utilization.  Power IQ provides accurate IT device, outlet group-, rack-, branch circuit- and data center-level power, current voltage, temperature and humidity monitoring, as well as remote outlet switching.  The open database connectivity (ODBC)-compliant system can be integrated with data warehouse and enterprise reporting systems.
